FAQs

Am I eligible to receive training through WY Create?

To be eligible you must be a creative freelancer or microbusiness living or registered in one of the five local authorities in West Yorkshire (Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds or Wakefield.)

What is a freelancer?

You are a freelancer if you are working for yourself and selling your skills to clients. You may be self-employed – i.e., you pay tax through Self-Assessment; or a sole trader - i.e., the sole owner of a business.

What is self-employed?

A self-employed creative will initiate projects, seek funding and manage client relationships. A self-employed person is someone who is normally seen as responsible for the success or failure of their business and decides what work they do and when they do it. In the UK they pay tax through Self-Assessment rather than PAYE and do not get sick pay or holiday pay.

What is a sole trader ?

Some people who are self-employed are the sole owners of a business – these are called sole traders. Unlike a limited company, a sole trader does not have to register with Companies House or have a director.

What is a microbusiness?

A microbusiness is a registered company with 0-9 employees. Both directors and employees of creative microbusinesses registered in West Yorkshire are eligible.

I am a graduate. Am I eligible?

Yes. Graduates from Further Education and/or Higher Education (FE / HE) who are taking their first steps to establishing a creative industries business within West Yorkshire are eligible.

I am a student. Am I eligible?

No. This programme is designed for graduates, freelancers and microbusinesses.

How much does each course cost?

All the workshop sessions (both in person and online) are free.

Will I be compensated for travel costs and loss of income whilst training?

We have agreed a limited number of honorarium payments for individuals based in West Yorkshire to attend in person courses only. You may be eligible to receive an ex gratia payment if you are, (a) a freelancer, sole trader or self-employed and, (b) any of the following apply to you:
